10 Dec The First Trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence Is Here And It Is Intense
Independence Day holds a special place in the history of the cinematic apocalypse. We’ve rarely seen the eradication of human civilization by hostile aliens portrayed so vividly, so explosively, than in the 1996 blockbuster: The destruction the White House and Empire State Building by jets of green light is an iconic scene in cinematic history. Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith cracking one-liners and punching aliens — and even Bill Pullman’s now-iconic speech (and disastrous presidency) during the film’s third act — are classic bits of camp of the mid-90s Summer Blockbuster Explosion phase. It is the very definition of a modern blockbuster.
Twenty years later, Independence Day has a sequel, aptly dubbed Independence Day: Resurgence. From the looks of the first trailer, the alien threat is back — and it’s bigger, badder, and more deadly than ever before.
Luckily, it also looks like the sequel will closely follow the same formula as the first film. Pullman and Goldblum will reprise their roles, and master of disaster Roland Emmerich has returned to the director’s chair. And thank God: In an age when reboots and sequels can yield depressingly bland results, Independence Day: Resurgence is one we actually look forward to watching.
